Flood claims have become a very public and contentious since Hurricane Katrina. FEMA/NFIP through insurance companies have made flood claims much more difficult than necessary.
The damages from flooding are typically relatively easy to determine. IICRC has designated flood water as category 3 or black water. This means all flood water is contaminated. The reason for this is that flood waters back up the sewer system causing raw untreated sewage to back up onto the surface. As this contaminated water travels across the surface, it picks up pesticides, fertilizers, oils, petroleum products and all of this gets into the structure. These contaminants cannot simply be cleaned off most surfaces. These days, flood claims have become a new fight when they really should be pretty easy.
